1908-1986. English cartoonist and writer. In
1939 he began producing daily `pocket
cartoons' for the Daily Express, in which he
satirized current social mores through such
characters as Maudie Littlehampton. He was
originally a book illustrator and muralist,
and in the 1930s and 1940s produced several
tongue-in-cheek guides to architectural
fashion (such as Homes, Sweet Homes 1939 and
Drayneflete Revisited 1949), from which a
number of descriptive terms, such as Pont
Street Dutch and Stockbroker's Tudor, have
entered the language.
