  1. 1908-1986. English cartoonist and writer. In
  2. 1939 he began producing daily `pocket
  3. cartoons' for the Daily Express, in which he
  4. satirized current social mores through such
  5. characters as Maudie Littlehampton. He was
  6. originally a book illustrator and muralist,
  7. and in the 1930s and 1940s produced several
  8. tongue-in-cheek guides to architectural
  9. fashion (such as Homes, Sweet Homes 1939 and
  10. Drayneflete Revisited 1949), from which a
  11. number of descriptive terms, such as Pont
  12. Street Dutch and Stockbroker's Tudor, have
  13. entered the language.
